Price Of Refilling Cooking Gas Per Kg In Nigeria

The price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly referred to as cooking gas, has seen a modest decline in some parts of Nigeria this week, offering relief to households struggling with rising living costs.

Market checks by Naija News show that BOVAS filling stations are currently selling cooking gas at ₦990 per kilogram, one of the lowest rates in recent months.

Rainoil outlets sell at around ₦1,020/kg, while several independent distributors still charge between ₦1,100 and ₦1,150/kg depending on location and supply costs.

This modest price drop follows recent statements by the President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, who pledged to make cooking gas more affordable for Nigerians.

Speaking during a facility tour at his Lekki Refinery, Dangote criticised current market prices as “too high for the average Nigerian” and revealed that his refinery currently produces thousands of tonnes of LPG daily.

He warned that if middlemen and distributors failed to reduce prices, Dangote Refinery might begin direct-to-consumer sales to bring costs down and encourage households to transition from firewood and kerosene to LPG.

Why Prices Vary Across Locations

Depot Landing Costs – The price at which gas is sourced from storage depots has a significant impact on retail pricing.

Transportation Expenses – Rising diesel and trucking costs add to the final price for consumers.

Foreign Exchange Rates – LPG imports and equipment costs are sensitive to fluctuations in the naira-dollar exchange rate.

Regional Demand and Supply – Areas farther from coastal depots often experience higher prices.

Middlemen Markups – Multiple distribution layers can push retail prices above expected rates.
